Oh yeah, I had an epiphany...

...the other day. About Gen X and the Millenials. I was up late watching a documentary on MSNBC about homeless teens in Portland, and I was marveling at their lack of interest in anything that might be a normal human life.

And then it popped into my head: they know it's all over and they are waiting for the call to battle. They are just killing time waiting for something to die for.

It's not that they don't understand modern society. It's that they do.

Barb-

I would venture that you a half right. As a borderline Gen Xer/Millennial and big Douglas Coupland fan, I've thought and written a lot about my generation.

I believe that it is not so much that our generation has not been given a cause to fight for, but we've seen the bitter realities of what such a war would entail.

Several of my friends participated in the anti-globalization protests in Seattle in 98 or 99. They caused a considerable amount of damage and raised new awareness for the consequences of global trade.

I honestly believed this would be the cause of our generation. That was until I was living in Downtown Manhattan and watched my neighborhood turn into a war zone. The terrorists showed us the ultimate act of protest.

I attended the first NYC protest after 9/11. There were more reporters than protestors, and none of those with signs or slogans were even interested in property destruction.

This may only be my position, but there is nothing I'm willing to fight like this for anymore.
